AVIA-GIS conducts eighth VECMAP on-tour in Berlin

March 24th 2018

VECMAP® on-tour has successfully ended its second season with the last workshop in Berlin as part of the 28th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Parasitology.

We thank Prof. Dr. Georg von Samson-Himmelstjerna from the Freie Universität Berlin, who was also the Conference Chair, for hosting us and supporting us in organising the workshop.

The workshop was on the 24th of March, 2018. Despite the fact that it was held on a Saturday, which was also the last day of the conference, we had a very good presence with participants coming from different institutes and backgrounds. Such a mix is very important to as it enhances the discussions and overall experience.

Our participants represented: Freie Universität Berlin, Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, German Environment Agency, Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Federal Office of Consumer Protection & Food Safety, University of Bremen, University of Antwerp.

It is not a surprise to have such a blend as VECMAP helps not only researchers in their mission studying species distribution, but also decision makers to overcome one of their important health threats: the spreading of vector-borne-diseases.

…The workshop was very well organized. Thanks to the precise preparation and the structured guidance of Fatima and Wesley, the practical session was good exercise for the application of the software VECMAP... Dr. Carola Kuhn, Umweltbundesamt, (The German Environmental Agency)

…This was very useful and informative workshop. I am working on vector borne zoonotic disease. I found VECMAP a very useful tool for the studies relating to vector-borne diseases. It is an integrated comprehensive tool for disease surveillance with unique features… Khushal Khan Kasi, Institute of Epidemiology, Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Germany

During the workshop, participants got introduced to VECMAP®, its added value to their work, and how to gear it to their specific needs. They also got a hands-on training on spatial modelling with VECMAP® Lite using their own VECMAP® Lite software package. Follow-ups on VECMAP Premium are being arranged after the workshop.

… this workshop was not only very interesting, but also so much fun! I really liked the interactive and practical way... I would love to use it actually with data of parasites, as I am working with these… Thank you for this very insightful and enlightening day… Lisa Käbisc, Freie Universität Berlin

We thank all our participants for their enthusiasm and learning spirit, and we look forward to hearing about how they will integrate VECMAP® into their work.

"VECMAP® on-tour" is the new Avia-GIS initiative to organize introductory workshops hosted by institutions throughout Europe which are at the heart of the action.

This workshop is one of several workshops to come that will take place in different countries until the month of April 2017. Next season starts in September 2017. If interested, please express your interest by clicking on the link.
